September is Pharmacy Week!!! Blow your own vuvuzela! Celebrate Pharmacy Week in your own environment! Pharmacy Week is intended to be an opportunity to create awareness in consumers of the services that pharmacists provide, and their role in healthcare. Its incorporation into the national Health Calendar, together with other critical issues such as TB, HIV and AIDS, diabetes and heart disease, shows that the contribution of pharmacists is appreciated and important.For many years, the focus was solely on pharmacists and medicines, but it has been realised that the pharmacist has the knowledge and experience to encourage patients to take an holistic approach to their health. Screening tests and health advice, for example, form an important part of the pharmacist’s activities. Use of the poster and flyersThe poster and flyers are available in 9 languages – English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Southern Sotho, Setswana, Venda, Sepedi, Xhosa and Tsonga. While a limited number will be posted out in the Pharmaciae, pharmacists are welcome to download them from the PSSA website and print them for use in the pharmacy. Making an impact on your community Pharmacists may choose to become very involved in Pharmacy Week, or they may ignore it. The choice is theirs. The opportunity has been created, and how you use it is up to you. The activities in which you engage will depend on the needs of your community. In past years, many pharmacists have demonstrated their creativity and have made sure that their visibility in their communities was improved during Pharmacy Week.
